Dersin Amacı This MA-level course introduces students to Discourse Analysis (DA) as a theoretical framework and analytical toolkit for understanding how language operates beyond the sentence level in spoken and written contexts, with a particular focus on language teaching and learning. The course aims to bridge theory, analytical practice, and pedagogical application, equipping students with both conceptual depth and methodological awareness.
Dersin Tanımı The course begins with an overview of discourse analysis and its position within applied linguistics, followed by an in-depth exploration of key concepts such as discourse, context, text, interaction, and meaning-making. Students then engage with core analytical dimensions of discourse, including cohesion and coherence, thematic progression, and pragmatic meaning, examining how these features contribute to textual organization and communicative effectiveness. As the course progresses, particular emphasis is placed on the interplay between discourse analysis and corpus linguistics, enabling students to explore how qualitative discourse-oriented approaches can be complemented by quantitative, corpus-based methods. Students are introduced to data-driven analyses of authentic language use, fostering critical awareness of methodological choices in discourse research. A substantial component of the course is devoted to the analysis of discourse across genres relevant to academic and educational contexts, including EMI lectures, research article highlights, transparent peer review reports, article abstracts, and disciplinary academic writing. Through these genre-based analyses, students examine how discourse conventions vary across contexts, disciplines, and communicative purposes. The course also foregrounds metadiscourse in written and spoken texts, highlighting how writers and speakers organize discourse, engage audiences, and construct stance—particularly with reference to pedagogical applications in English language teaching. Throughout the course, students are encouraged to critically reflect on how discourse-analytic insights can inform materials development, classroom interaction, academic literacy instruction, and teacher education. By the end of the course, students will have developed the ability to analyze authentic discourse data, evaluate discourse features across genres, and articulate the relevance of discourse analysis to language teaching theory and practice.

2 Analyze spoken and written texts beyond the sentence level by identifying patterns of cohesion, coherence, thematic progression, and pragmatic meaning.
3 Apply discourse-analytic frameworks to examine genre-specific features of academic and educational texts (e.g. EMI lectures, article abstracts, highlights sections, peer review reports).
4 Integrate corpus-based methods with discourse analysis to investigate authentic language data and interpret quantitative patterns in relation to communicative function.
5 Identify and evaluate metadiscourse features in spoken and written discourse, explaining their role in audience engagement, stance construction, and pedagogical effectiveness.
6 Demonstrate pedagogical awareness by articulating how insights from discourse analysis can inform language teaching, materials development, and academic literacy instruction.
