Course objective The aim of the course is to provide the students read the inscriptions and analyze the cultural assets such as mosques, tombs, caravanserais, bridges, tombstones,fountains, etc. of Seljuks and Ottoman Period by teaching Arabic alphabet and the structure of Arabic and Persian words used in Ottoman Turkish language.

Course contents
1 Definition, subjects and references of the course. Importance of the Ottoman Turkish Language in the field of art history.
2 Arabic alphabet, the usage of Arabic letters in Ottoman Turkish language, letters special to Ottoman Turkish, spelling the vowels and the consonants.
3 Epigraph and Islamic epigraphy
4 Inscriptions of Seljuks, Early Ottoman and Ottoman Period.
5 General features of the inscriptions.
6 Sample texts on the inscriptions.
7 Samples of various building inscriptions.
