Course objective To equip the participants with skills essential for doing independent research in ELT
Course description Research issues within the field of ELT

Course contents
1 This course focuses on the nature of how to carry out quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods research in ELT.
2 The students are required to read key chapters assigned each week and do the eight tasks that will help them put into practice what they learn.
3 The basic aim of this class is to help novice researchers striving to be independent researchers learn the craft of doing research in education.

1 Follow the steps involved in doing independent research in ELT
2 Define basic research related terminology without difficulty
3 Compare and contrast quantitative and qualitative research paradigms
4 Construct a survey instrument and validate it
5 Use statistical procedures by using SPSS for validating surveys
6 Carry out normality test
7 Put into practice the working knowledge of sampling strategies in quantitative and qualitative research
8 Conduct research in ethically appropriate ways
9 Write a research report by following the conventions of scientific writing
10 Gain basic knowledge of types of mixed methods research
